WILL LIKED SOMEONE OTHER THAN JADA

will-smith saltpeppa

Apparently before he met Jada, actor Will Smith was trying to HOLLA HARD at Pepa from Salt and Pepa. And, according to her – dude was TRICKIN ON HER too!!!
Here’s what Pepa had to say about it in a recent interview:

"I thought Will was really cute and we would hang out a lot on the road. He liked to take care of me and never let me spend a dime. He was that kind of guy, real generous.
I remember when they won their first award, he asked me to go out with him afterward. He was so excited. We were walking along the street getting ready to grab something to eat, and he just gave this homeless guy $100 dollars."
"I sometimes kick myself when I think about what could have been. He was so nice to me, but I really wasn't feeling him. I guess I couldn't appreciate a nice guy like Will Smith.
He wasn't thug enough. I was attracted to thugs and hoodlums. Will was too nice to me."

Girl … we understand … too many of us have passed up on the Will Smith’s of the world to get with the Treach’s of the hood ….

OMARION TALKS TO MUCH FOR WAYNE

omarion-drops-by-mtv-dec-trl

R&B singer Omarion has hit back at suggestions he was dropped from Lil Wayne's record label imprint after leaking his collaboration with the rapper.

The former B2K singer signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money roster earlier this summer and even made an appearance on the Young Money Presents America's Most Wanted Music Festival roadshow last week.

On Wednesday, the Ice Box hitmaker's unreleased duet with Lil Wayne, entitled I Get It In, surfaced on the internet - and that same day Young Money rapper Mack Maine confirmed on his Twitter.com page that Omarion had been booted from the Young Money crew.

Maine also clarified that the track was an unauthorised leak, prompting gossips to speculate Omarion had been axed for secretly distributing the song online.

But Omarion insists he actually requested to be let out of his contract.

BLACK MAN DIES IN POLICE CUSTODY

Technorati Tags: ,,,

popo

Investigators in Tennessee are looking into how an 18-year-old man died while in police custody.

The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro reports that Andron Reed died after officers arrested him Friday night. They say it all started when Reed led them on a high-speed chase.

It eventually ended in a crash, but authorities say Reed did not have any apparent injuries.

Reed's brother, who was with him at the time, told a Memphis newspaper that he could hear Reed being beaten at the jail.

Reed was later found unresponsive and died.

Investigators say he put up a struggle with officers when he was arrested, but they're not sure if that's what caused his death.

"We do know that he was fairly combative, that officers had to use some restraint to get him under control, these are things that we know right now," said TBI Spokesperson Kristin Helm. "Whether or not he was beaten or died from natural causes, those are things that will be determined as a result of the autopsy and the course of our investigation."

IS SOLANGE CUT SEXY ???

solange-and-beyonce

Many of my besties in the blogosphere clown on the Knowles sisters. Not because of their talent, Lord knows both of these beautiful Houston women can entertain like nobody's biz. It's because of their hair.

My amiga Fresh of Crunk and Disorderly coined the term "wig crypt" for the Knowles family, and my other amiga Luvvie, well she'd just refer to Beyonce's typical hairstyle as a flammable hairhat.

We try not to bring that kind of judgment over here at BV Hair Talk.

So I'll just say, I was so pleasantly surprised at Solange's new 'do. She is workin' the TWA like nobody's business!

C-MURDER WAS CONVICTED OF MURDER

cmurder

On Friday Corey Miller, who's known to the world as rapper C-Murder, was sentenced to life in prison following a conviction of second-degree murder earlier in the week.

Miller, the brother of Percy Miller, once known as rapper Master P, was convicted on a 10-2 vote by a a jury in the shooting death shooting a 16-year-old fan in Louisiana in 2001.

This was the second time that a jury convicted Miller in the case -- but a 2003 conviction was overturned.

Earlier in the week after the conviction was made known the victim's family left in tears and had this reaction:

"I'm not rejoicing. I feel bad for (Miller's) family. But at least they can see him. What have we got but a gravesite and a photograph," said George Thomas, whose 16-year-old son, Steve Thomas, was shot to death during the Jan. 12, 2001, brawl in a now-closed Harvey, La., nightclub.

Miller's family and friends also cried outside the courtroom. His sister, Germaine Miller, lost control of her emotions and accused the prosecutors of corruption. Not only that, but indirectly asked for the involvement of President Obama.

"I have feelings and I'm sorry for Steve Thomas' family," she said. "I lost a brother also! Where are all the witnesses at the club? Come out, be here, be a witness, come up here! If you [are] not Corey, don't worry about [the name] C-Murder, you come up here and show these people we need to deal with this! We need to deal with it. I'm tired of everybody holding their breath. Where is justice? Where is Barack?"

Falsely Accused Texans Wait for Reparations

Exonerees1-thumb-360xauto-3703

By theGrio

About 40 former Texas inmates cleared by DNA evidence are looking forward to a big payday on September 1st.

Texas leads the nation in DNA exonerations. According to The Innocence Project - a legal organization that handles these cases - 241 prisoners have been cleared nationwide in the past 20 years. Thirty-eight were convicted in Texas. Now, the state is trying to make up for their lost time.

The last time Jerry Evans was in a courtroom was 23 years ago when a jury sentenced him to life in prison for sexual assault. But this summer DNA evidence cleared him.

"Had these test results been available at the time of the trial, you would not have been convicted in this case," the judge said at his exoneration hearing.

Evans walked out of prison a free man - cleared of any wrongdoing.

"Now that I look back at it," said Evans, "I wonder now how in the hell I did 23 years in prison."

The Worst Part May be Behind Us?

Presiden Barack Obama

BEN FELLER

President Barack Obama on Friday welcomed a dip in unemployment as evidence "the worst may be behind us" with the recession well into its second year.

Earlier, however, the White House said that the president still expects unemployment to hit 10 percent sometime later this year.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the two positions don't contradict each other.

"I would describe the report that came out today as the least bad report that we've had in a year," Gibbs said. "But we still have a long way to go."

The new Labor Department numbers show that employers cut 247,000 jobs in July, another job loss but also the smallest reduction of any month this year. The unemployment rate dropped marginally from 9.5 percent to 9.4 percent, although one of the reasons for that change is that hundreds of thousands of people left the labor force.

"Today, we're pointed in the right direction," Obama said in brief remarks in the Rose Garden hours after the report was released. "While we've rescued our economy from catastrophe, we've also begun to build a new foundation for growth."

Even so, Obama said: "We have a lot further to go. As far as I'm concerned, we will not have a true recovery until we stop losing jobs." He also said he won't rest until "every American that is looking for a job can find one."

The president used the new jobs figures not only to pitch the benefits of the already passed stimulus package but also to press for policy changes on health care, education and energy that he seeks.

Dr. Byron Price: The Legal Benefits of Changing Our Drug Policy

by Dr. Byron Price, Texas Southern University

On his website, President Obama offers us a “seat at the table,” which is the equivalent of citizens offering policy prescriptions to his administration. This unprecedented effort to increase citizen participation in the policy making process has the added benefit of simultaneously empowering citizens in a way that our government has not done and has to be what the campaign meant by “change we can believe in.” The criticism of whom he has appointed misses the mark concerning what I believe his change mantra signifies. Since the president appears to be open to unsolicited advice, I offer the following criminal justice recommendations and justification for these suggestions.
President Obama and the 111th Congress should consider ending drug prohibition.
“Consider the consequences of drug prohibition today: 500,000 people incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails for nonviolent drug-law violations; 1.8 million drug arrests last year; tens of billions of taxpayer dollars expended annually to fund a drug war that 76% of Americans say has failed; millions now marked for life as former drug felons; many thousands dying each year from drug overdoses that have more to do with prohibitionist policies than the drugs themselves, and tens of thousands more needlessly infected with AIDS and Hepatitis C because those same policies undermine and block responsible public-health policies.”

As the preceding paragraph illustrates, “The War on Drugs” has been a dismal failure and has gifted nonviolent African Americans offenders, especially males a permanent handicap—a lifetime of limited opportunities. The collateral consequences of a drug conviction which limit African Americans opportunities are:
The denial of financial aid and work study .
Felony Disenfranchisement.
Lifetime ban on cash benefits and food stamps.
Lifetime ban on public housing.
Termination of parental rights and ban from becoming adoptive or foster parents.
Remove the felony conviction question on applications of employment.

Steve Harvey’s Book: It’s going to be a Movie?

BV Newswire has learned, exclusively, that filmmaker Will Packer has designs to adapt Steve Harvey's best-selling book 'Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man' for the big screen.
An official announcement isn't expected to be serviced to film industry media until next week, but the mastermind behind black blockbusters such as 'Stomp The Yard' and 'Obsessed' and Screen Gems have reportedly acquired the film rights to the Amistad/Harper Collins book, which has been atop the New York Times Best Sellers list for the past six months.
"It's pretty amazing," Harvey, a first-time author, told BlackVoices.com about the book's meteoric success back in February. "It really has to be some amount of favor from God, because I have no experience at writing a book," he continued. "It ain't like I've been there, done that. It's got to be favor from God. It's gotta be something that he has planned for me bigger than I could see, because I just wanted to write a book so the women on my show could quit asking me to write a book."

How to Raise a successful Black Male

Raising successful black boys alone, but not without help

By Donna M Owens

David Miller is a man on a mission. Simply put, he wants single mothers who are raising sons to know they're not alone.
So the former public school teacher - a co-founder of the youth-focused Urban Leadership Institute in Baltimore - has developed an ambitious national campaign called "Raising Him Alone." It's designed to help single mothers and their sons by providing a network of resources, advocacy and access to community-based services.
Since launching the initiative back in April, Miller has reached out to predominately African American audiences across the country, via workshops, seminars, online initiatives and more. Several celebrity moms have joined the crusade, including Dr. Mahalia Hines, a Chicago educator whose son is the rapper/actor, Common; and Sheron Smith, mother of entertainer, Mos Def.
"We have been to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other places, meeting both single mothers and grandmothers, because a lot of women are raising their grandchildren," said Miller, 41, a married father of three, with one son. "The experience has been fulfilling, but extremely alarming ... An inordinate number of women are raising boys alone. Their sons have no contact with their fathers, or the contact is sporadic or minimal at best."
According to Miller, the mothers he's met hail from a myriad social and economic backgrounds, and don't fit easy stereotypes. Some are have always been single, others are separated or divorced. A good many are educated, professional women, he notes, who have found themselves without the partners they believed would be around to co-parent their sons.
"Some of these sisters thought they would be married or with someone for the rest of their lives," he said. "Most never dreamed that they would be raising their children alone."
"Raising Him Alone" is funded by the Open Society Institute and its Campaign for Black Male Achievement. The organization has earmarked $12 million dollars over the next several years to address issues related to black boys and men.

Florida Woman Suspended from Work Without Pay for not Speaking to Mayor

Woman suspended for not saying hello to the mayor

JEFF BURNSIDE

If you see the mayor of Deerfield Beach, Florida out on the street, you better say hello.

City maintenance worker Cassandra Moye was suspended for two days without pay for failing to greet Mayor Peggy Noland while at work earlier this week.

Moye has the unenviable job of cleaning up trash and restrooms for $12.33 a hour, a job she was suspended from for failure to pay homage to the mayor while she spoke with Moye's boss.

"I didn't speak to the mayor and so my supervisor suspended me for two days," Moye said. "She is the Mayor, but I don't know her personally and I didn't think it was right for me to interrupt them, so I just kept about my work."

Moye's supervisor, George Edmunds issued Moye a memo stating Moye was being suspended because "the disrespectful attitude you displayed to the Mayor was unacceptable."

Moye said she was also threatened with termination.

Suspect in the Death of Vernon Forrest Goes to Court

vernon forrest suspect

By theGrio

As his grandmother sat nearby weeping, a 20-year-old man charged with killing ex-boxing champion Vernon Forrest had his first appearance in court Wednesday morning.

Demario Ware, who turned himself in to authorities Tuesday night, is charged with murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

He appeared at a jailhouse hearing in front of Fulton County Magistrate Sylvia McCoy, who read him the charges. Wearing a navy blue jail jumpsuit and handcuffs, Ware said nothing other than "yes, ma'am" and kept his eyes on the floor. He is being held without bond.

Ware's grandmother, Rose Thomas, sat in the courtroom crying.

"He wasn't raised up to do the thing he done," she said after the hearing. "I'm sorry to the gentleman that got killed and his family. I know if I'm hurting like I am, then I know they're hurting."

Police say Forrest, 38, was shot to death July 25 after he chased a man who robbed him of his championship ring and Rolex watch. No other arrests have been made in the case, but police do not believe Ware is the person who shot Forrest.

The investigation continues into the shooting.

Anti-Gay Violence Rises in Black Communities

antigay

By Kenyon Farrow

The recent shootings in a Tel-Aviv LGBT center that left 2 dead and 15 injured understandably shocked the world. Though incidents in the black community usually receive little or no attention, we have our own problems with homophobic violence here in the U.S.

On July 26th in New Orleans, a 21 year-old born with the name Eric Lee, who dressed in women's clothing and went by the name "Beyonce" was found dead of multiple stab wounds in his apartment. According to The Advocate.com, Lee had been arguing with the three young women who were later arrested and charged with his murder.

With the exception of the accused being women, this story is all too familiar. According to the most recent report for the Anti-Violence Project, while bias violence against LGBT people increased only 2% from 2007-2008, the number of murders jumped 28% over the same period and were at their highest level since 1999.

Of all reported bias violence, 20% were people of African descent. According to the Gay & Lesbian Straight Education Network report one-third of all African-American LGBT students surveyed experienced some form of physical violence in school due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, and were the among the least likely of all students of color to report incidents to parents or other school authorities.

Black LGBT children also learn at an early age that to be queer can be mean violence, even if you have a supportive family, which I was lucky to have. But a protective family may not help you in the outside world.

A new plan promotes the adoption of African-American children

fostercaretopper

Rosemary Armstrong fondly recalls the first time she met her daughter Micayla, then 2, at her foster home.

The African-American toddler screamed when the caseworker tried to pick her up, but she happily sat on Armstrong's lap and smiled.

Micayla didn't talk at all to most people, but during their second meeting, she started communicating: "It was 'Mommy' and 'Daddy' from day one," Armstrong says. "It was so fast."

Armstrong and her husband, Terry, also African-American , decided to adopt from foster care after discovering they could not have a child biologically.

They met Micayla in April 2008, and her adoption was final in February 2009. Micayla, who turned 4 on Monday, bonded quickly with their two other children, Armstrong's son, Jaiere, 7, and goddaughter Alexis, 14.

'A perfect parent'

While blacks account for 15% of U.S. children, they make up 32% of the 510,000 kids in foster care, according to a May 2008 report by the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, a private research group. The report is based on 2006 data, the latest available. It shows that black children in foster care, especially older ones, are less likely than white ones to be adopted.

To help deal with that imbalance, a federally funded ad campaign is to be unveiled today. It is aimed at encouraging blacks to adopt from the foster care system. The ads will appear this fall on radio, TV and in newspapers.

"They're long overdue," says Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute.

A 1994 federal law, the Multiethnic Placement Act, prohibits denying or delaying an adoption because of race but requires "diligent" efforts to recruit parents of the same race.

The new ads, developed by the Advertising Council, are part of a series that began in 2002 to promote adoption from foster care. The ads, like prior ones, are humorous and carry the same tagline: "You don't have to be perfect to be a perfect parent."

Professor Gates Is Part-Irish And Related To Cop Who Arrested Him

Henry Louis Gates Jr., the black professor at the center of the racial story involving his arrest outside his Harvard University-owned house, has spoken proudly of his Irish roots.

Strangely enough, he and the Cambridge, Mass., police officer who arrested him, Sgt. James Crowley, both trace their ancestry back to the legendary Niall of the Nine Hostages.

In a PBS series on African-American ancestry that he hosted in 2008, Gates discovered his Irish roots when he found he was descended from an Irish immigrant and a slave girl.

Man Alleged Beating While Driving With A White Woman

CHICAGO (CBS) ― New allegations of brutality by Chicago police have surfaced. In his

As CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports, the suit names two officers and implicates several others.
"I thought I was gonna die because I couldn't breathe," said alleged police beating victim Curtis Mason Jr.
Blood vessels were broken in an eye and his wrists were allegedly cut by tight handcuffs.

Mason says the injuries he captured with photographs were caused by Chicago police.
"In the beginning, that's what I asked them, 'why am I being arrested' and from that point, it turned into, 'why are you continually hitting me?'" he said.

Jennifer Hudson's Movie 'Winged Creatures' Renamed 'Fragments'

After winning Oscars in 2006 for their roles in 'The Last King of Scotland' and 'Dreamgirls,' respectively, Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson worked together on a film called 'Winged Creatures.'

With a cast that includes Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, Jackie Earle Haley, Josh Hutcherson, Embeth Davidtz, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Robin Weigert, the movie seemed, at the the very least, promising. Not quite.

It was shelved for three years while producers tried to find a distribution company. Now, with its new title, 'Fragments,' this Rowan Woods-directed film will be released in a limited number of theaters on July 31, with a DVD release date set for Aug. 4.

Klansman Might Walk Away From Charges of Kidnap and Murder

JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- The U.S. Supreme Court should decide whether a reputed Ku Klux Klansman should have been tried on a kidnapping charge 43 years after two black men were abducted and slain in rural Mississippi, a federal appeals court said Thursday.

A majority of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said other Civil Rights Era cold cases could be affected by a Supreme Court ruling on whether time had run out for prosecutors to charge James Ford Seale.

Seale, now 73, was convicted in 2007 of abducting two 19-year-old friends who authorities said were beaten, weighted down and thrown, possibly still alive, into a Mississippi River backwater in 1964.

Since the conviction, Seale's case has worked its way through the 5th Circuit, including an acquittal that was overturned.

The Right Way to Take Care of Your Child’s Hair

little girl hair

Your little girl is an angel most of the time... until you sit her down between your knees to comb her hair. Then it's tears and squeals and tantrum time.

I don't have kids myself, but trust me, I know. I was once that little girl. And I can tell you from experience, there's a right way and a wrong way to care for your child's hair.

I first learned about this story via The Root, in Teresa Wiltz's essay Beauty, the Brush, and Black Girl Pain. I can barely stand to watch this now-infamous YouTube video (click the picture of the little girl to watch), which raises more questions than it answers.

For example, does this mother think she's actually making an efficient and effective attempt at combing her little girl's hair? Because she isn't. In fact, she's doing just the opposite.

Is Love an Addiction

heart

After a break-up with with your spouse, significant other or love of your life, you might try to remain friends with your ex, slowly cut off contact, or torch every last relic of the relationship.

But one thing is inevitable: Eventually you have to move on. So why is it that some people have a hard time letting go, months or even years after ending a relationship? Although it's natural to mourn the loss of a relationship, some people take such feelings too far.

One example at the extreme end of the spectrum, is Lisa Nowak. The former NASA astronaut and married mother of three was accused earlier this year of trying to kidnap the woman who was dating Nowak's former lover, Navy Cmdr. Bill Oefelein.

Nowak -- who is awaiting trial -- pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping, battery and assault, and the defense has filed notice of intent to claim temporary insanity by citing obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, insomnia and a brief psychotic disorder.

CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed suit Friday against Wells Fargo & Co., accusing the second-largest mortgage lender of steering blacks and Latinos into high-cost subprime loans.

"As a result of its discriminatory and illegal mortgage lending practices, Wells Fargo transformed our cities' predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhoods into ground zero for subprime lending," Madigan said in a statement.

High foreclosure rates resulted from the illegal sales practices, the state's attorney general said.

Tyler Perry Takes Philly Kids To Disney World

A group of kids from Philadelphia who said they experienced prejudice firsthand arrived in Orlando, Florida on Friday for an all-expense paid trip courtesy of actor Tyler Perry.

65 day campers were rejected from a Philadelphia-area swim club earlier this summer, allegedly because of their race.

Shortly after the incident, Perry said he would be treating those kids and their families to a trip to Disney.

"We're excited to be here," camp parent Darryl Bizzell said. "We can't wait to get on the rides, see the amusement park, Mickey and Minnie, can't wait."

When asked about the June 29 incident, camper Taleeah Allen-Wight said she was disappointed and upset, but that Perry 's gift was kind and gracious.

Philadelphia officials are investigating the discrimination allegation against the swimming club.

Professor Gates Plans To Meet With Officer Again Over Beers

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The officer who arrested a top African-American professor said talks over beers Thursday evening at the White House were productive and the two men plan to meet again.

Sgt. James Crowley and Henry Louis Gates Jr. sat around a patio table with President Obama and Vice President Biden, drank beer, munched on snacks and talked about the arrest that has sparked debate about racial profiling and police procedures.

"It was a private discussion. It was a frank discussion," Crowley said of the meeting, but would not divulge specifics except to say that no one apologized.
